Atelier Mark Cloet has existed for almost 30 years. Mark Cloet is an artist with solid professional knowledge and a great mastery of materials. His work shows respect for craftsmanship and tradition, but is also open to new techniques and materials. This attitude is reflected not only in his art, but also in his way of life, in his way of cooking, in his dealings with his environment, and in the way he approaches the work of others.
In the shop, the same dedication is visible: respect for carefully selected items, chosen with the support of third parties where necessary to deepen the knowledge. Each object is presented with an eye for the space and in appreciation of everyone who has contributed to the whole.
At a time when small-scale shops are becoming less visible, this project shop offers a new “sales-production house.” The goal is to make beautiful and high-quality utensils accessible to a wide audience. Designers are given the opportunity to present their latest products in their artistic or technical context. Each collaboration results in a new product that is developed together with the featured designer. These products are released under the name “Article No.” with a unique serial number.
Mark and Janna have also been working for some time under the name (x, y) . The points x and y together form a plane, or a “support surface.” In this way, they promote research, collaboration, deepening and connection by bringing together variable points into a powerful whole.
Janna Huyghe has a rich family history in the knife trade. Her family has been active in this craft for four generations, a tradition that began in Bruges in the 19th century. Her brother Frank Huyghe continued their grandfather's shop in the Alfons Pieterslaan in Ostend. In the shop in the Keizer Karelstraat, a special place is reserved for a few carefully selected knife series. This choice testifies to a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and tradition.
Second-hand and found objects are also given a new purpose here. In the section “objets trouvés” high-quality pieces are brought back into the spotlight, with respect for the materials and the makers.
The city of Ghent is known for its fine tradition of new initiatives in hospitality, design, fashion and culture. As a vibrant and refreshing city, Ghent offers space for innovation without losing sight of tradition. 'Artikel Nr.' wants to contribute to this rich tradition and become a place where lovers of culture, craft and innovation feel at home.
